Piano tuning

A modern piano is typically tuned to a standard pitch of 440Hz. When playing alongside orchestral instruments, such as violins, the tuning pitch is best between 442Hz and 443Hz. However, for much older instruments a tuning pitch of 440Hz might not be achievable due to its age. It can still be tuned, mostly recommended at its current settled pitch. This ensures it sounds its best without placing unnecessary strain on the instrument.

A tuning service is recommended at least once a year. If the instrument is played regularly, two tunings a year can help maintain an enjoyable playing experience.

Seasonal changes in humidity can affect the piano’s tuning. Having the piano tuned twice annually helps preserve stability and tone throughout the year.

If a piano has been left untuned for a year or more, the tuning pitch may have fallen flat. In this case a pitch correction may be needed, followed by a second tuning 3 to 6 weeks later to allow the instrument to settle.
