Piano Inspection
If you are in the process of purchasing a preowned piano from a shop, Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace and you aren’t completely sure about the instrument, then it is a good idea to book an inspection so that I can have a look at it.
An inspection determines the condition of the instrument, its age and history. The priority is to inspect the acoustic components of the instrument: the soundboard, bridge, cast iron plate, tuning pin block and strings. How is the condition of the keys and action? Is everything still original? If not, have there been previous repairs or alterations done? How worn are the felts and how deep is the impact on the hammer heads? How has humidity, room temperature and direct sunlight affected the piano? Are there any signs of water damage, rust and corrosion?
More often than not, an instrument that is being given away for free doesn’t come with no additional cost. An inspection will give you an idea of the piano’s current condition and what work will need done to elevate it to be as good as new, playable, or in some cases advising if it is beyond any meaningful repair.
I always give honest, considered advice to help you make the best decision.
